Increase your online presence: If you haven’t been building your online brand, it’s time to start. Make sure your athlete profile on recruiting sites is up to date, as well as increase your activity on social media. Don’t shy away from sites like LinkedIn or Facebook, make sure you are visible anywhere coaches may be looking, and make sure your highlight reel is current.
Be strategic: From the start have a plan. Want to be closer to home? Want to play for a specific program or coach? Create a top 10 list of programs you want to focus on.
Be proactive!: Once you have a plan, reach out! Don’t cross your fingers and hope they call you. Let them know why you are a good fit for their program.

NIL Policies Student-Athletes Need to know
There are a lot of obstacles to navigate when trying to build your brand and market yourself for NIL deals. For most students, you have to do this on your own, or with the help of friends and family. Here are some important factors to consider:
What laws govern NIL for my university? Right now about two-thirds of states have passed laws governing how student-athletes can monetize their NIL rights. For high school athletes, many states prohibit NIL activities. You can check state laws here.
Use of Intellectual Property. *IMPORTANT INFO* Most universities and athletic conferences have IP policies that limit the use of their colors, logos, uniforms, and facilities. Make sure you check before you use any copyrighted property to be sure you are not violating school policy. Athletes who violate these policies run the risk of penalties from the school, conference, and sponsors of the program.
When NIL Activities are allowed: The Athletic Department or University may have policies that limit when you can and cannot conduct NIL activities. Most restrict NIL activities during practices, games or other defined team activities.
What types of NIL deals are allowed: It can vary from state to state, but there are prohibited types of businesses and activities, like gambling, tobacco or alcohol, that student-athletes are prohibited from working with. Make sure you check before signing any agreement to be sure the deal is allowed.
